6 Month Checkup

Notes:

  • Milo had her 6-month checkup today, which went pretty well. She went wild on the table again and ripped the paper to shreds pretty much immediately. Milo’s now 18.4 lbs. and 26.5 inches. According to the doctor, she’s still growing well.

  • She got her next set of vaccinations, and we found out that she won’t need any shots at her next checkup! She cried a bit after her shots, but she calmed down fast. We do have to go back in a month for a flu shot, but hopefully that won’t be too bad.

  • This evening, while we were playing with her on the floor, I noticed that she passed an object from one hand to the other, which I’m very excited about. It’s a skill she’s supposed to be developing right about now, and I think I was just excited to notice her do it for the first time tonight.

  • My back is still hurting today, pretty much all day, so Milo and I didn’t do much. She wasn’t as independent and wanted to be with me a lot, so that was a challenge. But we made it through.

  • Her naps were messed up because of the timing of the appointment, so her final nap was from 6-6:30 this evening, which is not ideal. Still, she went to bed at 8pm. I think the shots had a lot to do with her readiness for sleep tonight, though. Fingers crossed for no major reactions to the shots.

Lunch

For the second day in a row, Milo was happy to play on her own and didn’t need to be in my arms all the time. It is really refreshing when she feels confident enough to do this. She scooted around on the play mat, played at her little music station, and practiced staying up on her hands and knees quite a lot. I loved it.

She also had 2 2-hour naps today, which helped make for a happy girl. After her first long nap (which I shared with her), we went downtown to meet Chase for lunch, so Milo was (of course) happy to look around at everything. On the bus, she had a little staring contest with a man who was standing across from me. He was very nice about it, but I always feel the need to explain that she’s in this staring phase right now. (Do kids grow out of this phase?)

While at lunch, I managed to spill my whole drink on the table, bench, and myself without Milo’s help. So that was something.

This evening, Milo bounced on Chase’s lap a lot. She loves doing this. It’s like sit-stand-sit-stand in rapid succession, all while she’s happily smiling and cooing. Also, as we ate dinner, we gave her some mashed avocado so she could feel like she was eating with us. She didn’t put up much resistance as we fed her, so that was nice.

Notes:

  • Milo moved her arms and her knees forward today when on all fours. Still not quite crawling, but she’s making some movements.

  • I had some crazy back pain this evening, and I’m not sure why. It’s so intense, I had to take some ibuprofen, and I’m really hoping it goes away by morning.

Day One Hundred and Ninety-Four

Day One Hundred and Ninety-Four

Sleep

Sleep last night was great. Milo’s in a streak of good nights, and Chase and I are feeling spoiled again. She woke for the first time at 5am, and then she woke at 6am and then slept until 8! It felt great.

Milo was much less clingy today. In fact, she spent a lot of time playing while sitting up and while on her tummy. She often pauses what she’s doing and looks over at me before continuing to play, which I find super sweet. I can certainly feel the love in those glances.

She also had good naps, which I was grateful for. I think I worry too much about her naps, but I know that sleep is so important for babies and their brain development, so I fret. But I should just trust that she’s going to get the sleep she needs because she’s been so good about it basically her whole existence so far.

Not much else to report today, except that Milo picked her arm up while on all fours, and that’s the first time she’s done that. She didn’t move it forward; she just reached out for me while on all fours, and she immediately laid down on her tummy after. But I was super excited.

Notes:

  • Good poop today, still very stinky, but she achieved it without any juice. So I think our prune juice days are behind us at this point.

  • Milo is on all fours all the time now, but still not much forward movement that way.

  • Milo’s tongue was out a lot today, but I’m wondering if it’s because of the little rash around her mouth - is she trying to scratch using her tongue because that’s the only way she knows how?

  • She still loves standing at the sofa; she doesn’t even reach for things on the couch most of the time - she just loves to stand there and sometimes bounce. It’s kind of weird, but I’m glad she likes the simple things.

  • Milo is mesmerized by Sophie all the time. Whenever Sophie moves around (which isn’t too often), Milo stops what she’s doing and focuses all of her attention on her.

  • When nursing, Milo is still distractible, but not like she used to be. She doesn’t often try to rip my nipple off to turn and look at things anymore, which I’m super pleased about.

Day One Hundred and Ninety-Three

Day One Hundred and Ninety-Three

Monday

Notes:

  • Very lazy day, though Milo was demanding again - probably because it’s Monday and Chase wasn’t here. She demanded to stand much of the day to play, and she basically wouldn’t play on her tummy or sitting (she got fussed nearly every time I tried to help her play that way).

  • Terrible naps all day - 4 of them. Not sure what’s going on with naps, but she slept through the night last night, which felt strange. I woke twice during the night but went quickly back to sleep. Chase didn’t wake up at all. We both felt tired today - is it possible that we got too much sleep?

  • We took a trip to the store earlier in the day; Milo interacted with some nuns who invited us to their “house” (I immediately knew they meant church, i.e., house of the Lord, but I thought it was sweet that they said “I’d like to invite you to our house” instead of “to our parish”); at first, Milo smiled at the ladies, and then she started crying for some reason. The nuns were good spirited about it, of course.

  • Tonight we ordered pizza because it was a tiring day. Milo ate some avocado, but wasn’t really interested - she just wanted to stand and play more.

  • Chase said that Milo was basically crawling this morning, but I was still dozing. I’ve seen her move her knees forward once or twice (while her head is up) and then fall flat. She is so, so close.

  • Something to remember: I sing to Milo when we walk places - to the tune of Frère Jaques. Example: We are walking, we are walking, to the store, to the store, to buy something for dinner, to buy something for dinner, yum yum yum, yum yum yum. I narrate almost all of our outings. People must think I’m nuts, but I don’t care. Milo doesn’t seem to mind my singing.

Walk Through the Park

We had a lazy morning today, partially because Milo slept so well last night. She only woke up once during the night, and she slept until 7am today. So, we kind of all laid around on the bed together for a while and then slowly got up for the day.

Today was the first day in quite some time that we went for a walk in the park on a Sunday. We used to ride bikes on the street because it is closed for the day, but since I can’t ride a bike while Milo is small, we haven’t been back there on a Sunday since before she was born. Instead of biking, we walked for a while, and Milo slept some of the time. It was nice being out there again, seeing the roller blading party and swing dancing and just generally strolling along.

On the way home, we took a longer route, stopping first for frozen yogurt (for Chase) and later for ice cream (for me). Milo woke up along the way, and she even shot her hand forward into the ice cream in the half a second that it was close to her. We cleaned it off before she got a taste, though. No ice cream just yet for our girl.

Through the walk and in the ice cream parlor, Milo was very observant, and she didn’t get too fussed until we were almost home. By that time it was already time for another nap, and Milo was ready.

In the afternoon, Milo had more sweet potato, though she wasn’t as interested in it today as she has been in the past. Go figure. Later, Chase and I made tacos for dinner, and after Milo was safely asleep for the night, we watched Spectre, which we’ve been wanting to see for a while.

Notes:

  • Milo still has that rash around her mouth, which is probably because of the orange slice we gave her yesterday, but we’re not sure. Hopefully will go away soon.

  • Our girl still hates it when we touch her nose to get boogers out. Any time we touch her nose she cries. I wonder if this is going to be a thing for her.

  • Diaper changes now require a distraction. They have for a while, but now she’s getting worse about wanting to roll over, crawl away, or just start crying while we’re changing her.

  • More standing today, still with support and still wobbly. But she loves it.

Day One Hundred and Ninety-One

Day One Hundred and Ninety-One

Wonderful Day

Wonderful day today. It began early, at around 6:30am when Milo woke up. Luckily, Chase let me sleep a bit longer, and while I was sleeping … Milo pooped! and Chase changed the diaper!! Awesome beginning to the day.

Milo, Chase, and I spent some time wrestling around on the bed (read: Milo crawling all over us), which is always a lot of fun. She’s so determined when she sees something she wants or somewhere she wants to get to! Today we baited her with our water bottle, and she reached it easily. She doesn’t drink the water anymore; she just likes to chew on the spout.

After a quick morning nap, we went to Zazie to have brunch with Joe and Emily, who are in town for a wedding. Zazie did not disappoint, and we even let Milo lick on an orange wedge. I think she liked it, though I couldn’t see her face.

We followed up brunch with a walk through Golden Gate Park and a trip into the de Young Museum tower. That tower is amazing; it was such a clear day, and we could see the whole city from up there. Milo was sleeping for most of it, though. We said goodbye to Joe and Emily there, and then Chase and I went to the Twirl and Dip truck to get a butterscotch cream soda float. Holy cow, that was delicious.

Milo then decided to have an epic stretch of awake time. She was awake from about noon until about 3:30, and then she napped for 40 minutes. So, today was not a good day for napping.

Tonight, dinner was a real treat. We made reservations at Fogo de Chão, and the food was every bit as delicious as we thought it would be. We even gave Milo a little treat tonight: a tiny bit of banana, another suck on an orange wedge, and several fingertips of mashed potatoes. On the way home we noticed that she has a little rash around her mouth, which we’re attributing to the orange. We’ll hold off on giving that to her again.

Bedtime was easy: since Milo had been awake from about 4:10 until 8:10, she was very ready for sleep. So, Chase and I got to watch a movie and chill out. What a wonderful day. We are exhausted.

Notes:

  • Milo has a way of squeezing in succession that is very endearing. It’s hard to describe. She often puts her hand on something (a face, an arm, my chest, etc.) and then…squeeze…squeeze…squeeze. She does it quite a lot these days, especially when she’s sleepy. Sometimes, if she can’t squeeze, it’s just a kind of tapping with all of her fingers. I love it, and I hope she goes on doing this. It’s so stinking cute.

  • Tonight at the restaurant, Milo smiled and laughed out loud at a couple of female servers. It makes me wonder if she was reacting to them because she liked them or because she liked their bright lipstick. The only way to test this is to buy some bright lipstick.

Day One Hundred and Ninety

Day One Hundred and Ninety

Rainy Day

Milo was up at 7 today, and we spent time playing together on the carpet. I was really eager for her to get a good nap in before our class today, and she did a pretty good job: she slept from about 9 until 10:20, which was better than just sleeping 30 minutes, right? Bright side.

We got to class early and talked to one of the other moms for just a while. Her baby had just learned to crawl, so it was very cute to see her wobbling on her hands and knees. She and Milo spent some time just looking at one another and smiling. Then class was good, as usual, and as a bonus, Milo fell asleep while I nursed her, no fuss. She only slept about 30 minutes, but at least she slept.

On the way home, Milo was very talkative and active. She didn’t do well on BART (especially the unexpected delay between stops), but our time on the bus and picking up lunch was great, despite the rain.

When Chase got home this evening, both he and I had eaten recently, so we weren’t terribly eager for dinner. We put together Milo’s new toy, and she played well at it. She wasn’t too fussy when we put her down for the night, and then Chase and I spent some time looking at houses and talking about the weekend.

Notes:

  • I spend a lot of time these days watching Milo nap on the bed, and I absolutely love seeing her so calm and peaceful. It surprises me, though, just how much she moves during her sleep now. Often, she turns over several times or just moves her head to different positions. Sometimes this wakes her up, but often it doesn’t. And then, at the end of her naps, I just love the way she pops her head right up and looks around for me. Sometimes she cries or fusses a bit until I go over to her and talk to her a while, but even that is kind of sweet.

More notes

Notes:

  • Milo pooped again this morning - without prune juice! I think her body is getting the hang of processing grown up food.

  • Milo is now scooting herself with her arms, and she’s getting to her target faster than ever! It’s the cutest thing to see - she just puts her head down and scoots forward like a little worm. Hopefully soon Sophie will learn to move out of the way when she sees Milo coming after her.

  • Today we played a lot! She wanted to stand a lot, so we stood at the couch, at the play gym, at the exersaucer, and she spent a lot of time just standing facing me.

  • Milo also spent a lot of time on her tummy today, which is nice. She doesn’t always play on her tummy without fussing, so when she does, I back off and let her do her thing.

  • We went to Off the Grid again and had some food truck dinner. Milo seems to really like going out to this event, probably because there’s so much to see and live music.

  • Milo had a great 2-hour nap today, and she also had 3 30-min naps. So she got an adequate amount of sleep, and then she cried when we put her down for bed again. This time she only cried for about 2-3 minutes before going to sleep for the night.

Notes

Notes:

  • Milo’s gums feel softer than usual, so that has me wondering whether she’s really teething at this point. Time will tell.

  • In her attempts at crawling, today Milo did a sort of commando crawl. She moved herself with her forearms on the ground, but she didn’t use her legs at all. She just used those forearms to kind of drag herself forward. It was super cute, and I get so excited when she moves herself from place to place. Crawling soon!

  • Not great naps today; her final nap for the day was at 6:30, which meant that she was super awake when it was bed time.

  • Bed time was very difficult. She was tired but didn’t want to go to sleep. We had to let her cry again. Chase went in to comfort her, and she finally fell asleep after about 15 minutes. It never gets easier hearing her cry like that.

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Seven

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Seven

Baby Bus Rider

Milo was up at 5:30 this morning, partially because Sophie started meowing when I was nursing at that hour. I was a bit angry (read: furious). We let Milo chill out in her crib watching her mobile for a while before we all got up for the day. We do that some days, and Milo seems fine with it. Her mobile has a little projector, which shows images of animals as the top spins. So she just looks up at it and coos for a while. We also heard the music change to animal sounds and back to music, so we’re pretty sure Milo was pushing buttons in there.

Because she was up so early, her first nap was at around 8am, which felt odd. Her naps haven’t been as good since she began sleeping on her own again, but I’m hoping she resumes sleeping for more than 45 minutes at a time during naps. The Wonder Weeks says that at this stage in her life, Milo is probably going to sleep worse because of new sensations, etc. So maybe in the next few weeks things will change.

I got to feeling pretty bad mid-morning, which was made more challenging because Milo wanted only to be in my arms to play. So it was not very fun trying to take care of myself and my girl at the same time. I even missed a nutrition class I’d been planning to attend, which made me feel awful.

In the afternoon, after I started feeling a bit better, Milo and I set out on a minor adventure. We went to mail a few things, and then we set off to buy some clothes from someone who listed them on Craigslist. It’s my favorite way to buy clothes for Milo because we usually get a pretty good deal for a large number of items. The bad news is that the clothes are mostly way too big, so they’ll have to be stored for a while.

On the bus, since I had Milo front-facing in the Ergo, she finally got up close to the bright yellow bars between seats. Several times Milo put her hand on mine, moved my hand away quite deliberately, and then put her hand on the bar to hold on. It was pretty cute.

Notes:

  • She ate sweet potatoes after her nap, and I think they’re her favorite so far. She didn’t protest at all while I tried to feed her.

  • Milo was very happy to see Chase this evening, who got home earlier than usual. It’s so nice to see how she smiles when he gets home.

  • Our girl was fussy tonight, probably because she was up so early this morning. But her bath time was super fun!

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Six

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Six

Achey

I didn’t feel well most of today. I had a headache and body ache, and I didn’t get great sleep last night. It was one of those nights where I felt like I blinked and it was time to get up for the day. To make things worse, I blinked and it was Monday again.

Highlights:

  • Milo ate cauliflower today and was ok with it: she was skeptical at first and then accepting, as usual. Didn’t remain skeptical as long as the previous foods, so maybe she likes it more?

  • She pooped twice! Without prune juice! I’m going to start giving her a little bit of grown up food every day. Maybe doing it more regularly will help her body get used to it.

Something I want to remember:

  • When I nurse Milo during the night, her hand sometimes rubs my arm gently. Most of the time, when she’s nursing during the day, she still grabs at me, but it’s not gentle at all. She squeezes or pulls on whatever she can find, usually my face or clothing or hand. But during the night, she’s still pretty asleep, so she is gentle, and it feels so tender. I love feeling her little hand on me.

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Five

This girl is SIX months old today!!!

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Five

Six Months

Milo’s first Valentine’s day!

Actually, Chase and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, so it was just a normal day for all of us. It is Milo’s 6-month birthday, though, which is exciting! I can’t believe she’s already 6 months old. Where did the time go?

Milo slept until around 7:30 this morning, which was nice. However, I had a headache for much of the day, so Chase watched Milo while I took a nap. He’s so great, and I needed the rest, I think. My head felt slightly better when I woke up.

Milo only had 2 naps today, though they were better than yesterday. We went downtown, which was somewhat exciting because I’ve been avoiding it for quite a while (because of the Super Bowl, mostly). We decided to go to Ghirardelli and share a brownie sundae. Milo, of course, didn’t get any. But boy did she reach for it a ton!

After Ghirardelli, we went to the Converse store to look for shoes for Chase. We ended up buying Milo her first pair of Chuck Taylors! They’re a little big for her, but maybe that just means she can wear them longer. She wore them for a hot minute when we got home, and then we took them off of her so that she could check them out. She licked them a lot and pulled on the shoe strings. I think that means she liked them.

Dinner tonight was tomato soup and grilled cheese, which is the first time we’ve tried cooking it at home. I gave Milo a little taste of the tomato soup on my finger tip: she liked it and didn’t make a face the way she does when tasting other things for the first time, probably because it had spices and cream in it.

Finally, bed time was easy, but Milo was up at around 10:30 to nurse. Probably because she was up from 4:30 to about 8pm again and was over tired when we put her down.

After Milo went to sleep, Chase and I got to spend some time looking at houses again, and we ended the night with John Oliver. Not a bad Valentine’s Day.

Notes:

  • Milo still loves standing more than sitting or being on her tummy. We’re looking for some kind of activity center that she can stand at, but nothing good so far.

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Four

Day One Hundred and Eighty-Four

Naps and Tiles

I was really nervous about Milo’s sleep last night, but it was fine. She woke twice: once around midnight, again at around 3am, and then she was awake for the day at around 6:30. Not a bad night.

Today we went another round with getting her to nap on the bed, away from me. The first nap went well, and she slept on the bed without trouble. It’s nice to see her sleeping during the day away from me. I’ve had to keep Sophie off the bed during Milo’s naps, which is no easy task, but I’ve been pretty successful. And I think in time Sophie will learn to vacate the area when she hears the white noise.

We mostly stayed home again, so we spent time playing on the floor a lot. We took a quick trip to Whole Foods and I wore Milo front-facing. She loved it, as usual, and kicked the entire time we were out. We also gave Milo carrots again today, and she seemed to enjoy them. There were no spit bubbles or pushing food out of her mouth this time.

In the mail today we received our foam alphabet, so we put those on the floor so that Milo can fall down without getting too hurt. She seemed to like them right away. She likes to feel things with her fingers by scratching, so she did a lot of scratching on the tiles because they’re slightly textured. And she spun around and around on her belly with such ease! It was fun for all of us.

This evening was a bit difficult because Milo was awake from 4pm until bed time (8pm), which made her over tired. Because of this, I think, she was restless when we put her down, crying several times before going off to sleep for a longer stretch. Fingers crossed for a restful night.
